Fort Frances bowler Jeff Watts came away with a fifth-place finish Saturday in the men’s singles competition at the 2012 Canadian Open 5-pin Bowling Championships in Gatineau, Que.
Watts, representing Northern Ontario, sat in fourth place following the 30-game preliminary round held in 10-game blocks last Wednesday to Friday, totalling 7,345 pins to average 244.8.
But he was eliminated from further contention after losing 290-250 to Varian Layne (Nova Scotia) in the first “stepladder” match between the fourth- and fifth-place qualifiers.
Shawn Haley (Quebec), who qualified first with a 7,797 total from the preliminary round, went on to capture the title by beating Brad Rusnak (Manitoba) in the final.

Despite falling short of the national title, Watts did earn an award for the highest single game during the tournament, rolling a 408 early in the week.
