Ward needs tie-breaker to win men’s championship

It was an exciting ending to a two-day tournament Sunday afternoon at Kitchen Creek as Greg Ward and Bob Crowe went to a sudden-death tie-breaker to determine the men’s title at the annual club championship.
Tied at 153 strokes after two days of play, the two first played the 10th hole but remained tied. Then moving back to the ninth, Crowe appeared to be in the driver’s seat when his second shot landed about 10 feet from the cup.
But he three-putted for bogey from there while Ward, whose second shot had left him just on the edge of the green, managed to get up and down for a par-four and victory.
Club Pro Gord Workum said the weekend’s club championship went very well despite less-than-perfect golfing weather.
“It’s the best turnout ever,” he said. “It was really good.”
Workum made special mention of 83-year-old Steve Melnychuk, who shot an 80 on Saturday and then 82 on Sunday to win low net honours in the men’s Master flight.
“For his age, that’s remarkable,” Workum stressed.
