Ward, Livingston win club championships

Greg Ward put the finishing touches on a banner year on the golf course, firing a two-day total of 143 to win this year’s Kitchen Creek club championship by a whopping 10 strokes over Snake Krawchuk.
Ward certainly was hot Saturday, firing a three-under par 69, then followed that up with a solid albeit less impressive round of 74 on Sunday.
After getting a birdie at #6 on Saturday, Ward recorded birdies on the 10th, 12th, and 13th holes to begin pulling away from the pack.
Actually, he got off to a good start on Sunday, finishing the front nine at two-under, before faltering on the back nine, including a double-bogey on the 18th.
“I was pretty happy,” he said. “I wasn’t really on fire but this year I have had a lot of good numbers like that, in the high 60s and the low 70s.”
It marked the second time Ward has won the local men’s club championship (his first came in 1997). Before that, he won four-straight junior titles from 1993-96.
Meanwhile, Carol Livingston cruised to the ladies’ club championship with a 36-hole total of 191, six strokes better than Shannon Burton. It was the ninth straight ladies’ club championship for Livingston, who has won the prestigious crown a total of 13 times.
But while she was obviously elated with the win, she was less than impressed with her scores, which included rounds of 95 and 96.
“I was working on a few things with my game,” said Livingston, who won her first title back in 1984. “I think it was the nerves of the tournament, I was missing some three-foot putts.”
Livingston said she had trouble adjusting to the weather conditions both days, but especially on Sunday when a steady rain created “soft” conditions and played havoc with her shots on the fairway.
“A lot of people said they had trouble with the conditions,” she explained, adding she was surprised to win the tournament by so many strokes.
