The quest to repeat has begun.
The Rainy River Community Voyageurs women’s hockey team, the defending ACHA Division II national champs, opened its 2011-12 season with an exhibition series versus the visiting Western Predators (Manitoba) over the weekend.
The Voyageurs opened play Saturday morning with a 2-1 comeback victory over the Predators as sophomore Kaylynn McBurney-Flett and freshman Brittany Johnson scored with less than four minutes to go in the third period.
Saturday night’s game ended in a 1-1 draw, with Fort Frances native Katelynn Stearns making 20 saves to earn the tie.
Then Sunday morning, the Predators and Voyageurs battled in a back-and-forth affair that went to overtime, when former Muskie Kristen Penner netted the game-winner to give her team a 4-3 victory.
Penner and McBurney-Flett led the Voyageurs on offence with two goals and an assist each during the weekend slate, with former Muskie Lindsey Roehrig adding a goal and two helpers.
The Voyageurs now will prepare for their first ACHA action Nov. 12-13 on the road against the Minot State Beavers.
Their next home games are slated for Jan. 13-14 versus the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.
