The Rainy River Community College Voyageurs earned silver in their home tournament over the weekend, backed by the scoring of Emo native Sarah O’Sullivan.
O’Sullivan netted five goals and an assist over three games at the 2007 Minnesota RRCC-ACHA Can/Am Showcase, but admitted she didn’t know what to attribute her early production to.
“That’s a good question,” she mused. “Maybe I just picked up last year where I left off.”
O’Sullivan roared out of the gate, scoring four goals and adding an assist as the Voyageurs stomped the Iowa State Cyclones 9-1 on Friday night.
The winning continued Saturday as goalie Melissa Calder, from Fort Frances, earned a 4-0 shutout over NDSU.
Four different scorers combined for goals in that game, including the last from O’Sullivan.
The Voyageurs’ fortunes turned on Sunday, though, as they fell 3-1 to the tournament’s reigning champions, the Winnipeg Polar Ice.
RRCC’s lone goal was a made-in-Canada power-play effort, with Emo’s Hannah Firth pounding the net to set up Stephanie Desmeules of Red Lake for the goal.
Megan Pinette of Dryden also drew an assist on the play.
Voyageurs’ head coach Jeff Wickstrom was pleased with how the team was coming together to start the season.
“The whole team has a part . . . the mood is phenomenal right now,” he enthused.
