The Muskie girls’ volleyball teams earned a split against the host Kenora Broncos in NorWOSSA action yesterday.
The junior Muskie spikers (2-2) rallied from an opening set loss to defeat the Broncos (0-3) in four sets.
After losing the first set 25-15, the black-and-gold took the next three by scores of 26-24, 25-15, and 25-20 to win the best-of-five match.
Head coach Jeff Rajala credited his team’s strong service game—particularly in the third set—for the win.
“Both Paula Vangel and Jamie Holliday served exceedingly well,” Rajala noted.
In the final set, Rajala put the same lineup that had suffered the loss in the opening set back on the floor and was thrilled with how they responded to the challenge.
“I was happy with the results because the girls who struggled in the first set showed a great deal of improvement in the last set,” he enthused.
The juniors were coming off a disappointing straight-set loss (25-18, 25-4, and 25-11) suffered at the hands of the Dryden Eagles here last Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Muskie senior girls’ squad (1-3) suffered their second five-set collapse in less than a week.
The black-and-gold took the first two sets by identical 25-19 scores against the Broncos (1-2) yesterday, but then could not hold on as they lost the next three 29-27, 25-15, and 15-8.
The senior spikers fell in much the same fashion here last Thursday against the Eagles.
After winning the first two sets by identical scores of 25-22, the Muskies dropped the next three 25-20, 25-10, and 15-10 to lose the best-of-five showdown.
Due to the Christmas holidays, both volleyball teams won’t resume NorWOSSA play until Jan. 11 here against the Dryden Eagles.
