Village People win tourney

The fifth-annual Kingsley Downs & Gus Lindberg Memorial slo-pitch tournament wrapped up over the weekend in Devlin with the Village People beating the Gillons’ Clippers 15-8 in the ‘A’ final.
The annual tournament has been ongoing in Downs’ name since 2003 after the longtime umpire was killed in a car accident.
Lindberg’s name was added to its title in 2007 in honour of the former umpire who passed away suddenly back in November, 2006.
Northwest Bay took the ‘B’ title with a 14-5 win over the Whiskey Jax while the Brew Jays bounced the River Rats 11-5 in the ‘C’ final.
The 11-team field included all eight squads from the host Devlin slo-pitch league, along with the Fort Frances-based Clippers and one team comprised entirely of members of the Downs family.
The Village People shrugged off a tournament-opening 16-5 loss to Northwest Bay before stringing together wins over Downs and the Booze Hounds to advance to the ‘A’ final.
The Clippers, meanwhile, cruised to three-straight wins over the Whiskey Jax (21-9), River Rats (20-2), and Variety Zone (13-5) before coming up short on Sunday.
