The Muskie senior girls’ basketball team was unable to pull off an upset of titanic proportions as the powerhouse Hammarskjold Vikings (Thunder Bay) sunk the black-and-gold’s dreams of a trip to the all-Ontarios with a two-game sweep of the NWOSSAA final over the weekend at Fort High.
After winning the opener Friday afternoon (the score was not available at press time), the Vikings jumped out to a 37-15 halftime lead in Game 2 on Saturday morning en route to a 61-25 victory.
Hammarskjold raised its mark in regular-season and playoff action this year to 16-0 after dominating the Thunder Bay circuit.
Vikings point guard Katie Ulakovic hit three three-pointers Saturday on her way to a game-high 15 points—a total matched by teammate Lindsay Inkila, who did all her offensive damage in the first two quarters.
Taka Hoy pitched in with nine points for Hammarskjold, which repeatedly found itself at the free-throw line throughout the game, going 16-for-30 compared to the Muskies’ 4-for-14 showing at the stripe.
Jolene Stahn paced Fort High on Saturday with nine points while Kayla Windigo had six.
Hammarskjold advances to the OFSAA ‘AA’ championship in Belleville on Nov. 26-28.
