It was a different level of competition by far than what the Muskie track-and-field team has seen so far this year.
Fort High needed a wheelbarrow to bring home its medals in its first two meets this year, both over in International Falls.
But with 11 schools in the running, and many from proven Minnesota track-and-field schools, Tuesday’s meet in Virginia yielded only four medals.
“We had a really good day in Virginia,” said Muskie head coach John Dutton.
“Not as many top-three finishes as in the Falls but there was lots of good competition,” he noted.
Silver medals went to Ellie Petsnick in the girls’ high jump and two to Sekina Scheibler in the boys’ shot put and long jump.
Taking home bronze was the Muskie junior girls’ 4x800m relay team, with Jessica Empey filling in for Ashlyn Beck (ill).
Another schedule change for the Muskies now will see them head to Dryden after all for the Harry McMaster Classic this Monday.
The meet is going ahead after it was called off two weeks ago due to the sudden resignation of Eagles’ head coach Mike Wood.
Fort High also has pulled out of a meet set for May 19 in Hibbing due to what Dutton called “too many entry restrictions.”
