The town is on board to help sponsor the 69th-annual OFSAA boys’ hockey championships here next March.
Council is expected to vote in favour of being a “platinum” sponsor at tonight’s regular meeting, contributing a grant of $5,000 towards the 16-team tourney.
This donation will be used toward ice rentals at the Memorial Sports Centre.
On top of that, council will examine further sponsorship during the 2017 budget process.
The OFSAA Hockey 2017 committee, led by Bob Miller, has a total sponsorship target of about $50,000.
It expects close to 500 people will be sleeping, eating, and spending time and money in Fort Frances during the tournament.
The committee of the whole will meet first at 5:30 p.m., but will go in-camera for an indefinite amount of time to discuss five items (including a business opportunity, three personnel matters, and a potential acquisition of property).
Other business on tonight’s agenda includes:
•a report re: last month’s “Fight the Blight” campaign;
•an update re: ongoing capital projects;
•the town’s draft audited financial statements for the year ending Dec. 31, 2015;
•a report re: traffic control bylaw amendments for the library parking lot;
•a letter from Irene Laing, District 1A Senior Games Committee—Sister Kennedy Centre, requesting financial support for the games;
•a letter from Colonization Road East resident Cheryl Armstrong re: a review of the town’s prohibited animals bylaw;
•a letter from First Street East resident Melvin Haukaas re: laneway elevation concerns;
•a notice from Glenn Treftlin, secretary-treasurer of the Rainy River District Municipal Association, re: the 2016 per capita levy;
•an update from bylaw enforcement officer Patrick Briere re: parking in the downtown core strategic plan initiative;
•a letter from King’s Highway residents Ahlan and Judith Johanson re: municipal property standards; and
•an e-mail from Lt. David Small, Troop Commander Guns, Canadian Armed Forces, re: use of a portion of the Memorial Sports Centre parking lot.
