The young lions had their paws rapped, but their wounds should heal enough for them to fight another day.
The Baudette Bears, made up mainly of Grade 8 players, took advantage of the Muskie ‘C’ football squad’s Grade 7-based lineup in a 44-0 win here yesterday in the black-and-gold’s seasonopener.
“The [Bears’] first unit is mostly Grade 8 and we’ve only got four Grade 8 players,” noted Muskie ‘C’ head coach Dean Bruyere, who lauded Jesse Brunetta and Matt DePiero as having solid games for the home side.
The Bears jumped out to a 30-0 lead after the first quarter before the Muskie defence buckled down to keep Baudette’s offence under control for most of the rest of the contest.
“We’ve got a couple of weeks [until the Muskies’ next game Sept. 22 at Baudette]—we’ll be in much better shape by then,” predicted Bruyere.
“We’ve only had five practices in full uniform.”^In related news, the Muskies’ scheduled exhibition games in Thunder Bay this weekend have been moved to Sept. 27-28.
