‘Toothpick’ squash tourney returns

The Ladies’ “Toothpick” squash tournament made its triumphant return to Fort Frances over the weekend.
The tournament has been revived with the resurgence of new and past female players, where a total of 10 women participated in two round robins of ‘A’ and ‘B’ divisions.
Veteran Mary-Beth Tkachuk won the ‘A’ division after four matches.
Past player Missy Belluz, who was back playing squash, captured the ‘B’ title with four match wins.
The “Toothpick” tournament was created in 1985, with the premise being that the ladies should look like “toothpicks” for the amount of squash they played.
Squash player numbers were at an all-time high then, as well.
The tourney existed until 2007, when the numbers of ladies playing competitively started to dwindle.
The next all-ladies tournament will be the “No Sweat” squash tourney in the spring.
Up next for the Sunset Country Squash club is the second-annual Northern Cup Challenge here against Sioux Lookout on Saturday.
