Tkachuk tops Rookie Round-Up

In a tournament named for first-year players, the veteran had the final say.
Mary-Beth Tkachuk added to her impressive list of squash championships by winning the ‘B’ division of the annual Rookie Round-Up/Toothpick ladies’ tournament here Saturday.
Tkachuk took the title by blanking Nikki Bagacki 3-0 in the best-of-five final after edging Manami Alexander 3-2 in the semi-finals. Bagacki had nudged Kris Krag out of contention with a 3-2 win in her semi-final battle.
On the consolation side, Donna Main downed Megan Ross 3-1 in the final after turning aside Megan Canfield 3-0 in the semi-finals.
The ‘C’ division was decided in a four-person, round-robin format, with Keira Chown posting a 3-0 record for a total of nine points (one point for each game won in her matches) to capture the title.
Chown defeated Dana Kosowick 3-1, then blanked Timea Fleury and Christine Ruppenstein by identical 3-0 scores.
Kosowick finished second with a 2-1 record (seven points), followed by Ruppenstein in third (three points), and Fleury in fourth (one point).
Meanwhile, Rebecca Tolen reigned supreme in the three-person ‘D’ division, which was run the same way as the ‘C’ event. Tolen went 2-0 for six points, beating runner-up Lisa Allan (four points) by a 3-1 margin, then shutting out third-place Kate Woods (one point) by a 3-0 count.
Finally, the “Rookie” division operated the same way as the ‘B’ event and when the smoke had cleared, Maria Sanders sat atop the pile after holding off Dee O’Sullivan in the championship final.
Sanders had beaten Zoe Boileau in one semi-final while O’Sullivan got past Solly Santiago in the other.
The consolation side saw Wendy Horn get past Amy Smart in the final, with Horn stopping Chrissy Visser and Smart thwarting Rachel Carter in their respective semi-finals.
