Matt McLellan scored twice while Taylor Jorgenson added the other to pace the Times Tigers (Fort Frances) to a narrow 3-2 win over the Rainy River Legion on Sunday afternoon to capture top honours in a novice hockey tournament in Emo.
Rainy River opened the scoring in the first on Travis Mykytyn’s unassisted tally. Then after McLellan tied it at 1-1 midway through the second, Dan Usiski put the Legion back out in front with a goal.
Jorgenson made it 2-2 in the third before McLellan netted his second of the game with just over two minutes to play to give the Tigers the lead.
Rainy River pressed in the late stages of the game but were unable to crack the Tigers’ defense.
In round-robin play, the Tigers came out on top by tying the Emo Rockets 4-4 and then rolling over the Food Town Fury (Fort Frances) 6-0. Meanwhile, Rainy River tied West End Motors (Fort Frances) 2-2 before dumping Busch’s Steelers (Fort Frances) 7-2.
In the semi-finals, the Tigers sidelined tagg’s (Fort Frances) 3-2 while Rainy River had no problem knocking off Skates and Blades (Fort Frances) by a 5-0 count.
On the ‘B’-side, William Brandon netted a hat trick to fire the Emo Rockets past West End Motors 5-1. Brian Wayash and Chris Mutz also scored for Emo while Mitchell Cain got the Fort’s lone goal in the first.
Earlier, the Rockets had sidelined the Food Town Fury 3-1 and Neebing Flames 3-0 while West End Motors downed Busch’s Steelers 5-2 and doubled the Emo Wings 4-2.
In the ‘C’ final, Busch’s Steelers got a two-goal performance from Benji Drazenovich, including the winner at 3:42 of overtime, to nip Emo OPP 4-3.
Terry Carmody’s second goal of the game with 4:35 to play had tied the score at 3-3 and sent the game to overtime.
Andrew Easton and Brent Lindberg were the other snipers for the Steelers.
