Thunderbirds ousted

The Soo Thunderbirds will be flying home well before they wanted to.
Fort Frances native Davis Ross notched his first point of the tournament to help the Portage Terriers dump the Dudley Hewitt Cup champion Thunderbirds 7-2 on Tuesday at the 2015 RBC Cup in Portage la Prairie, Man.
Ross and Kevin Pochuk set up Jordyn Boyd’s power-play goal at 1:04 of the third period as Portage (2-1) eliminated the Soo (0-3) from playoff contention.
The Terriers and Melfort Mustangs (2-1) will square off tonight to decide who gets first place heading into Saturday’s semi-finals.
Melfort needed overtime yesterday to earn a 4-3 win over the Carleton Place Canadians, whose roster includes Fort native Jordan Larson.
Larson assisted on Ryker Killins’ marker at 13:32 of the third.
The Canadians will finish the round-robin in fourth place, having dropped two-straight games after starting the week 2-0.
Carleton Place fell 4-3 to the Penticton Vees (2-1) on Tuesday.
Larson, held pointless in that game, two goals and two assists at the tournament so far.
Penticton faced the Soo this afternoon.
The Vees can clinch first with a win and a Portage loss, but can wind up no higher than second if the Terriers beat the Mustangs.
The final is set for Sunday.
