The Borderland Thunder acquired another big defenceman Thursday, shipping forward Cole Hayward and an undisclosed amount of cash to the Selkirk Steelers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for Chris Schaen.
“It’s a deal that’s been in the works,” Thunder head coach Dave Allison said. “We’ve been concerned with David [Lloyd’s] back injury and Ryan [Hampton’s] head injury.
“It left us a little thin on the back end.”
The arrival of Schaen, a 6’2, 195-pounder, is the second such acquisition for the Thunder, who signed Iron Range Yellow Jacket blueliner Matt Alexander last month.
A 20-year-old Thunder Bay native, Schaen netted 16 points in 50 games with the Steelers last season.
The move was mutual between Hayward and the Superior International Junior Hockey League team. Enrolling at Red River College in Manitoba this fall, Hayward, 19, said the Thunder gave him a good heads up on the deal.
“They just asked me if I still wanted to play and I wanted to,” said the left-winger, who appeared in 40 regular-season games for the Thunder last season, scoring three goals and adding eight assists.
“Cole’s been an excellent player for this team,” said Allison. “This gives him an opportunity to play while going to school.”
The Thunder’s main training camp opens here Aug. 29.
