Thunder sweep Hawks

Starving for game action, the Borderland Thunder satisfied their appetite with an offensive smorgasbord that left the stomachs of their opposition churning.
The defending SIJHL champs made the most of their first taste of competition in 10 days, blitzing the K&A Variety Golden Hawks 9-0 and 9-5 on Friday and Saturday night, respectively, at the Ice for Kids Arena.
The Thunder fired 97 shots at the Hawks’ net in the two-game sweep, scoring five time in the third period of both contests.
Dan Hoehne turned aside 35 shots to earn the shutout Friday night—the first win of the season for the man named the SIJHL’s top goalie last year.
He received plenty of offensive support from his teammates, with Kevin Webb and Aaron Boyer each collecting a pair of goals and adding an assist to lead the way.
Defenceman Dave Gooch pitched in with a goal and two assists while Andrew Dault, Kurt Hogard, Jordan Murray, and Nate Weossner added singles for the Thunder.
On Saturday night, it was the line of Weossner, Josh McAndrew, and Ian Lockman who carried the day, combining for 13 points as the Thunder (3-2-0-0) outshot the Hawks (1-6-2-0) by a 54-31 margin.
Weossner netted four goals while McAndrew added a pair and had three assists. Lockman earned four assists.
Rob Scales, Ryan Murray, and Dennis Morrison had the other goals for the Thunder against former Borderland goalie Ryan Crane, who started the first two games of this season with the Thunder before being released.
The Hawks, who also had former Thunder forward Jared Catholique- Bruyere in the line-up Saturday night, got a pair of goals from Sean Trevisanutto and singles from Vince Kurzewski, Brent Irwin, and Kevin MacDonald.
The weekend series wrapped up a season-opening five-game homestand for the Thunder, who will play five of their next six on the road, starting with a rematch this Friday and Saturday in Thunder Bay against the Hawks.
Borderland’s next home game is slated Oct. 21 against the Dryden Ice Dogs.
