Thunder sweep Golden Hawks

After seeing their eight-game unbeaten streak ended last week against the Dryden Ice Dogs, the Borderland Thunder started a new one over the weekend here, beating the K&A Variety Golden Hawks 8-2 on Friday night and then 5-2 on Saturday.
Dan Hoehne and Mike Downer earned the wins in goal, stopping 44 and 46 shots, respectively.
After spotting the Golden Hawks a 1-0 lead Friday night, Kevin Webb—the SIJHL’s player of the month for February—evened the score assisted by Andrew Perrault.
Nate Weossner then added two more before the end of the first— one on the power play at 19:20 (Webb/Kurt Hogard) and another 14 seconds later (Justin Green).
K&A Variety got back within one 7:45 into the second period, but Rob Scales (Webb/Clayton Windigo) netted his seventh goal of the season before Steve McLeod (Perrault) made it 5-2.
Borderland added a pair of power-play goals in the third.
Green (Webb) scored his seventh just 58 seconds in before Kyle Schroder netted his fifth at 11:59 (Hogard/Perrault).
Webb (Councillor/Rob Scales) got his second of the game to close out the scoring.
Then Saturday night, the Thunder again surrendered the first goal, but then tied the game in the second on Schroder’s sixth of the season (McLeod/Ryan Mayman).
The Thunder then exploded for four goals in the third period to ice the win.
McLeod netted back-to-back goals, from Schroder/Hogard at 7:09 and then Hogard/Andrew Dault at 10:17.
Webb then made it 4-1 with his sixth point of the weekend (Sean Councillor).
The Golden Hawks closed to within 4-2 before Schroder notched a power-play goal, from McLeod and Cale David, with just over a minute to go.
The Thunder next play in Dryden on Wednesday, before closing out the regular season here March 5-6 at 7:30 p.m. against the KC Bulldogs (Thunder Bay).
