Thunder romp over Ice Dogs

The Borderland Thunder took hold early and never let go, dumping the Dryden Ice Dogs 7-2 up there last night.
Justin Green (David Gooch) opened the scoring with his fifth of the season at 4:21 of the first before Rob Scales (Gooch/Josh McAndrew) made it 2-0 with his sixth less than two minutes later.
The Ice Dogs cut the lead in half with under four minutes to go in the period, but Aaron Boyer (Green/Kevin Webb) netted the Thunder’s third of the frame with just 16 ticks left on the clock.
Borderland added three more in the second. Green scored his second of the game midway through the period before Nate Weossner got his 16th at 17:14.
Ryan Mayman then tallied with less than a minute left to make it 6- 1. Boyer assisted on all three goals.
Webb had a chance to add to the damage when he was awarded a penalty shot, but failed to beat the Ice Dogs’ goalie.
Webb made up for it with a short-handed marker at 9:09 of the third, then the Ice Dogs ended the penalty-filled period at 18:55 to round out the scoring.
Dan Hoehne, named the SIJHL’s goalie of the week ending Feb. 8, stopped 31 shots to earn the win.
Liam Johnston and Breton Lindoff split the time between the pipes for Dryden—making 37 saves altogether.
The Thunder next head to Thunder Bay for games against the last place K&A Variety Golden Hawks tomorrow and Saturday.
The team then returns home for a re-match against the Ice Dogs on Tuesday (Feb. 24) at 7:30 p.m.
