The Borderland Thunder went 2-1 over the weekend in Thunder Bay to boost their SIJHL record to 24-5-2 to remain in second place behind the Fort William First Nation North Stars.
The Thunder won 6-2 over the struggling K&A Golden Hawks yesterday afternoon.
Ryan Mayman started things off in the first period, then Morgan Cekalla added another goal a short time later.
Brock Harling and Dennis Morrison both scored for the Thunder in the second, with Clayton Windigo and Aaron Boyer adding tallies in the third.
The Thunder outshot the Golden Hawks 39-33.
Kevin Kauk was credited with the win in goal, and now is 3-0 since joining the team from Dryden.
On Saturday, the Thunder were able to squeak by the KC Bulldogs by a 4-3 score.
Down 2-1 entering the third period, the Thunder got goals from Scott Bridgeman (Cekalla), Tyler Barker (Cekalla), and Aaron Boyer (Kurt Hogard) to pull out the victory.
Bridgeman (Martin Klousel) scored the first goal in a game that saw the Thunder put 51 shots on net to the Bulldogs’ 22. Kauk got the win between the pipes.
But it was a different story Friday night. Leading 2-0 on goals by Hogard (Boyer/Josh McAndrew) and Harling (Hogard/Clayton Windigo), the Thunder allowed three unanswered markers to fall 3-2 to the Bulldogs.
It was first time all season that the Thunder have lost to the Bulldogs.
The Thunder had 41 shots on net to the Bulldogs’ 28, with Tyler Gordon taking the loss to drop his record to 15-4-2.
Next up for the Thunder is a weekend series here against the North Stars, with action starting at 7:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday at the Ice for Kids Arena.
