The Borderland Thunder and Dryden Ice Dogs are going through the paperwork to join the Manitoba Junior Hockey League next season.
“It’s still in the works, but that’s definitely what we’re pursuing,” said Thunder general manager Brent Tookenay. “We’re still trying to fill their requirements.”
The MJHL currently has 12 teams, all based in Manitoba.
Last fall, the OCN Blizzard of the MJHL played against the Thunder in one of three exhibition games at the beginning of the season.
The MJHL champion Selkirk Steelers currently are playing in the Anavet Cup to decide the Manitoba-Saskatchewan champs who will advance to the Royal Bank Cup in Grande Prairie, Alta. on May 8-12.
In related news, the Fort William North Stars, who defeated the Ice Dogs to capture the SIJHL title earlier this month, beat Sault Ste. Marie 7-3 on Thursday afternoon to wrap up round-robin play at the Dudley Hewitt Cup in North Bay.
The victory gave the North Stars (1-2) third place and a berth in the semi-final showdown Friday afternoon against the host Skyhawks, who had beaten Fort William 5-4 to open the provincial ‘A’ championship on Tuesday.
The winner advances to the final Saturday against the unbeaten Aurora Tigers, with the winner of that game moving on to the Royal Bank Cup.
