The Borderland Thunder extended their season-high unbeaten streak to 11 games after a 7-3 win and 1-1 tie against the Northwest Wisconsin Knights in Spooner over the weekend.
The road trip improved the Thunder’s record to 15-7-8, but they still trail the Dryden Ice Dogs (16-8-7) by one point for top spot in the Superior International Junior Hockey League standings.
Kevin Webb scored on a breakaway with a minute to go in Saturday’s game to salvage the tie. The Knights had scored just a minute earlier.
“Their goalie made some big saves when we were pressing to keep the game scoreless,” said Thunder head coach Wayne Strachan. “We were fortunate to get the tie.”
On Friday, the Thunder scored four-straight goals in the third period to snap a 3-3 tie. Webb again came through, scoring twice, including the game-winner.
Kyle Prystupa, Chad Baldwin, Josh Baxter, Boomer Redford, and Ian Lockman also scored for the Thunder. Rob Hrabec started both games in goal.
Strachan said newly-acquired defenceman Troy Arnold, who came from the Iron Range Yellow Jackets last week for future considerations, played strongly in his first games with the Thunder.
Elsewhere in the SIJHL, the Thunder Bay KC Bulldogs beat the Yellow Jackets 6-3 and 7-5. The Jackets then fell victim to the Feathermen Hawks 6-4.
The Hawks sit in third place at 16-9-4—two points behind the Thunder.
And the Thunder Bay Snow-plowing Wolves earned the upset of the week, winning only their second game of the season with a 6-5 triumph over the Ice Dogs 6-5.
They lost their second weekend game to Dryden 5-1.
Next up for the Thunder is a home date this Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the Thunder Bay KC Bulldogs.
