Thunder drop first two games

The Borderland Thunder trail the best-of-seven SIJHL championships series against the Fort William North Stars 2-0 after losses Friday and Saturday in Thunder Bay.
After a scoreless first period Friday night, the North Stars jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second, with Aaron Boyer netting the Thunder’s lone goal (assisted by Morgan Cekalla and Brock Harling).
The Thunder made things interesting by getting the first goal in the third period, scored by Ian Lockman (Harling), but the North Stars answered on the penalty kill with two minutes left to regain a two-goal lead.
Josh McAndrew (Dennis Morrison/Kurt Hogard) scored with 13 seconds left to make the final score 4-3.
The Thunder did well in the shot department Friday by notching 30 while the always offensively-potent North Stars fired 41 at Tyler Gordon, who suffered his first loss of the playoffs.
Gordon would suffer his second loss Saturday as the North Stars skated to a 7-4 win.
The Thunder got off to a good start, leading 2-1 after the first period and then sitting tied 4-4 through two.
But the North Stars exploded for three unanswered goals in the third to seal the victory and the 2-0 series lead.
Andrew Dault led the Thunder attack with a pair of goals while Scott Bridgeman and Steven Sus added the others. Tyler Barker (two), Bridgeman (two), Hogard (two), and Derek Fisher were credited with assists.
The North Stars fired 43 shots on Gordon during Saturday’s game while the Thunder took 31.
The series will resume this Friday and Saturday (April 8-9) at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena.
Game 5, if necessary, would be back in Thunder Bay.
