The financial fortunes of the Borderland Thunder may be on the upswing if the efforts of a local group to create a booster club for the local junior hockey team come to pass.
Spokesman Eugene McPherson said this morning a letter has been sent to the executive body of the Couchiching First Nation, which owns the Thunder, stating the group’s intentions to offer monetary and public relations support to the team.
He expected to hear word of the band council’s decision on the matter either later today or sometime tomorrow.
“We want to not only assist financially with the Thunder, but give some good news items to be read about the team,” said McPherson.
He added if the band council accepts the plan, an initial meeting between the group and the council could be held as soon as this week.
“We don’t want to interfere with the operations of the Thunder themselves,” he stressed. “We want to showcase the players and work with the club.”^It was revealed last week that the Thunder had lost more than $122,000 over the team’s first two seasons of existence, although Couchiching Chief Chuck McPherson added that deficit has been reduced by roughly $40,000- $50,000 since the original figure was tabulated at the end of March.
