The future looks bright for the proposed Borderland Thunder booster club after group reps received a vote of confidence Monday night from the Couchiching band council.
Booster club spokesman Eugene McPherson confirmed Tuesday morning that the band council gave organizers permission to use the team’s name and logo in their future fundraising efforts.
“We were still going to go ahead with the club if we didn’t get the permission, but this certainly adds a little more clout,” added McPherson.
The next step is to hold an organizational meeting that will be open to the general public, tentatively scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Couchiching Recreation Centre.
At that meeting, an election of officers will be held—and suggestions about the club’s fundraising plans will be taken from those on hand.
“The fundraising we do will be outside what the team itself conducts every year,” noted McPherson, who mentioned such possible ideas as raffles and a weekly Bingo.
Couchiching chief Chuck McPherson applauded the booster club’s intentions, saying any support of the team was appreciated. He also stressed the club would not fall under the jurisdiction of the Thunder organization.
“These people that have an interest in starting the club, if their dedication translates into assistance for the Thunder, then it’s a success,” he remarked.
“If they’re successful, then it’s a success for the Thunder.”
