Thomson cruises to Ladies Open

The annual Kitchen Creek Ladies Open on Saturday left Christin Thomson looking for more competition.
The 19-year-old carded a one-under 73 (74 is par for women) to capture her third Open title in four years. Her closest competition in the first flight was Laureen Hill (87).
“A lot of people that have won it in the past weren’t there,” noted Thomson, also a multiple local junior and club champ. “It seemed like a lot of the ladies out there just had a bad day.”
Thomson said Saturday’s round came together halfway through at hole #1 (she had started on the 12th hole) as she birdied three of her final eight holes.
“I was just patient and eventually got some good holes,” she remarked.
The Ladies Open will be Thomson’s last tournament here before moving to New York around the end of the month to attend and play golf at St. John’s University.
Other flight winners among the 52-golfer field included Rita Woodland (95) in the second flight, Barb Asplund (99) in the third flight, and Christine Ruppenstein (108) in the fourth flight.
In other golf news, the team of Greg Ward, Jeromy Wensley, and Kyle Carrier won the annual Las Vegas scramble yesterday. Their score of 58 earned them a trip to Las Vegas in November, where they’ll meet the Kenora club champs.
Snake Krawchuk, Jim Ballard, and Dave Hyatt finished second with a score of 61 while the trio of Bob Mainville, Sean Taggart, and Brent Tookenay were third (63).
Meanwhile, Kitchen Creek club pro Steve Wood and associate pro Glen Mills won a two-man scramble tournament in Winnipeg on Friday. The duo combined for an 11-under 59 at the Rossmere Golf Club.
Wood also qualified for the Manitoba Titleist Cup team after his 16th place finish at another pro tournament at the John Blumberg Golf Club on Aug. 1-2.
The Winnipeg native fired a two-day score of 144 and will join Team Manitoba in a battle with Saskatchewan next month.
Mills also competed at Blumberg and finished 10th overall.
