The Fort Frances Thunderhawks completed their round-robin schedule at the Allan Cup in Kenora yesterday afternoon with an 0-2 mark after dropping a 3-1 decision to the Clarenville Caribous (Newfoundland).
The loss means the T’hawks will finish at the bottom of the Division I standings, which sets them up to face the second-place team from Division II in a quarter-final showdown tomorrow night.
Former OHL player Travis Chapman was an constant thorn in the side of the Thunderhawks yesterday, scoring a natural hat trick to lead his team to victory.
Two of his goals came on the power play.
Dale Sullivan, a draft pick by the Dallas Stars back in 2001, added a pair of assists for the Caribous.
Myles Kuharski netted the lone goal for the Thunderhawks, notching a power-play marker in the third period which spoiled the shutout bid of former San Jose Sharks’ prospect Jason Churchill.
The T’hawks had opened the tournament Monday afternoon with a 6-3 loss to the South East Prairie Thunder.
The Manitoba-based squad exploded for four goals in the second half of the contest after spotting Fort Frances a 2-1 lead early on.
Kevin Webb lit the lamp twice in the loss, with Derek Hansberry added a goal and an assist.
The top team from each division advances directly to the semi-finals, with the other four teams battling it out in the quarter-finals.
The tournament wraps up Saturday, with the final slated for 3 p.m. at the Kenora Recreation Centre.
