A motion on whether the Rainy River District School Board should join the Town of Fort Frances and Northwest Catholic District School Board to build tennis courts at the St. Francis Sports Field here will be voted on tonight.
Under the proposal, the local Catholic board would provide the land while the town and public school board would split the cost of development.
The total cost for the project is estimated at $500,000.
The public board’s finance committee has recommended trustees vote against the project.
While physical fitness, reintroducing tennis back into the curriculum, and community benefit were some of the reasons cited in favour of the tennis courts, the drawbacks highlighted by the finance committee included significant costs to the board, how only a portion of the district would benefit, and equality across the district.
The board meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. at Robert Moore.
Also tonight, this month’s “Recognition of Excellence” will be presented to Atikokan High School for its “Living and Learning Centre.”
Education Director Heather Campbell also will be making a presentation on “One Life, Many Gifts”—the project piloted in 20 boards across the province which educates students about organ and tissue donation.
Also on the agenda is a presentation about “Collaborative Marking Inquiry”—a project which North Star Community School in Atikokan has participated in.
