Teams throw rocks for cancer research

This year’s “Curl for Cancer” here Saturday raised almost $16,000 for cancer research.
The day-long event included curling, a dinner, and social.
The 24 rinks involved raised $15,862—the majority from pledges alone. The total is up by more than $1,500 from last year.
All the money will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.
“It was a wonderful success and everybody enjoyed themselves tremendously,” said organizer Nadine Johnson.
The top overall fundraiser was Ray Ducharme, who brought in $862. The Bill Godin rink brought in $1,862 as the top team.
Out on the ice, taking top honours in the fun ’spiel was the Joanne Hyatt rink, which included Lorna Robinson, Louise Erb, and Katy Engelking.
Money also was raised at penny tables and on a raffle for a fishing trip.
In addition, three people shaved their heads to help raise even more money—Sandy Taggart, Sandra Windego, and Arain Gary.
“One was a female so that was pretty exciting. I wouldn’t want to be her, though,” said Johnson, who added she’s looking forward to next year’s event.
