Lisa Penner and her Northern Ontario rink need to take their rock-throwing skills to the next level immediately.
Skip Peggy Taylor’s Kenora-based team, featuring Penner at third, were in a three-way tie for second place in the championship pool entering play today at the 2017 Everest senior women’s curling championship in Fredericton, N.B.
Northern Ontario, which also includes second Arleen Wilcox and lead Tracy Stasiuk, finished Pool ‘B’ play with a 4-2 record to tie for second and move on to the championship round.
After winning their first three games, Taylor’s crew suffered back-to-back losses with a 10-5 loss to Saskatchewan’s Sherry Anderson late Tuesday and then a 6-3 defeat versus Quebec’s Anne Hardy early yesterday.
But Northern Ontario closed pool play on a high note after downing the Northwest Territories 8-3 in its second game yesterday.
Each team in the championship pool takes its record against the other teams who made the pool into the round, with Taylor having beat Alberta’s Cathy King and Manitoba’s Terry Ursel earlier this week to go along with the loss to Anderson.
Northern Ontario faced B.C. this morning, with the score unavailable by press time.
Taylor then takes on Ontario tonight.
Tomorrow, Northern Ontario battles New Brunswick in the morning draw, then wraps up championship pool action in the afternoon against Nova Scotia.
The top four from the championship pool advance to the semi-finals on Saturday, with the first-place team facing the fourth-place squad while second- and third-place teams meet in the other game.
The gold- and bronze-medal finals go later Saturday.
