Tagg’s stole the show at the 20-team Pizza Hut Classic Tom Thumb tournament in Dryden last weekend while West End Motors captured the ‘B’ side crown.
Tagg’s netted five unanswered goals to down the Dryden Canadians 6-1 in Sunday’s final. Evan McCabe led the attack with four goals while Patrick Bobczynski and Nick Nault added singles.
After going undefeated in round-robin play, Tagg’s fought hard to edge the Kenora Century Cinema Stars 4-3 in the semi-finals.
Patrick Bobczynski got two goals in that one while Kyle Hill and McCabe netted singles.
Tagg’s had opened the play Friday with a 2-0 win over the Dryden Hawks. Joe Bruyere and McCabe were the goal-scorers while Dale Watson earned his first shutout of the tournament.
He also was named player of the game.
Then Tagg’s nipped the Sioux Lookout Travel Flames 2-1, with McGabe tallying both goals. Jacob Witherspoon was named player of the game.
In their third game, Watson recorded his second shutout as Tagg’s romped 13-0 over the Red Lake Diggers.
McCabe paced the team with five goals and an assist while Nick Nault (who was named player of the game) added a hat trick. Patrick Bobczynski tipped in two more goals while Matt Moen, Jamie Kaun, and Chris Bobczynski also scored.
In their final round-robin game against the undefeated Dryden Bruins, Patrick Bobczynski and McCabe each scored twice, with Hill adding a single, en route to a 5-1 victory.
Moen was named the player of the game in that one.
The Times Tigers also made it to the ‘A’ semi-finals but fell 4-2 to the Dryden Canadians.
Meanwhile, West End Motors reached the ‘B’ side final after nipping the Dryden Bruins 3-2.
Myles Kaykeeway (assisted by Steve Romaniuk) opened up the scoring, then Joe Basaraba netted his lone goal of the game to put the team up 2-0 going into the second period.
Jordan Sinclair sealed the win with the eventual game-winner early in the second period. But the Bruins didn’t go down without a fight, scoring a pair of goals but it wasn’t enough.
That win put West End into the ‘B’ final against the Ignace Phantoms and it was a real barn-burner.
Kaykeeway (Basaraba) put the Fort crew up 1-0. Then after Ignace had tied it at 1-1, Basaraba (Shane Beck) made it 2-1 for West End.
That lead held up until the third period when Ignace scored twice to jump ahead 3-2. But with just 1:29 left in regulation time, Jordan Sinclair tied the game and forced it into a three-on-three shoot-out.
Both teams doubled the score in overtime, sending the game into sudden death, in which West End prevailed.
Goalie Brady Caul was named the game MVP.
West End Motors had opened the tournament with a 9-2 romp over Kenora Petro Canada on goals by Kaykeeway (two), Basaraba (two), Brandon Legarie (two), Beck, Sinclair, and Brandon Sinclair.
Basaraba was named the game MVP.
Then they took on the Red Lake Campbell Nuggets and skated away with a 5-3 win. Basaraba got a hat trick in that one, with Nathan Calder and Luc Johnston adding singles.
Calder was named the game MVP.
West End then faced off against Dryden Novice Girls and blanked them 7-0. Kaykeeway and Reece Brown led the way with two goals each, with Sinclair, Basaraba, and Brandon Sinclair getting one apiece.
Jordan Sinclair was named the game MVP.
West End’s lone loss of the tournament came when they were beaten 7-3 by the Ignace Phantoms.
Steve Romaniuk dumped in two goals and was named the game MVP. Basaraba netted their other goal.
