Taggs scoops first point of season

It was like the old McDonald’s commercials with Wayne Gretzky and Mats Sundin.
Off the crossbar, off the goalie, nothing but net.
Tara MacEachern’s late goal didn’t earn Taggs a Big Mac, but it did secure them their first point of the year in a 2-2 tie with league-leading Curves during women’s division action July 9 in the Borderland Soccer Association.
MacEachern launched a high, arcing drive from 40 yards away that sailed over the Curves netminder, clanged off the crossbar, then deflected off the recovering goalie and rolled over the line to spark a roar of celebration from her Taggs teammates.
Curves (8-2-1) had their chances late, but Taggs (0-11-1) staved off the attack to finally break their losing streak. Candace Roseema had the other Taggs marker, while Rebecca Cornell and Mandy Wilson, the league’s top sniper with 15 goals, replied for Curves.
The previous evening, Curves reclaimed first place with a 5-4 thriller over Gillons’ (8-3-1) to knock them out of top spot.
Cornell and Nicole Rogozinski each notched a pair for the defending league champions, with Lindsay Roy adding a single. Natalie Desjardins, Laureen Cousineau, Susie Grynol and Andrea Boileau each tallied for Gillons’.
Cousineau’s marker was her 14th of the season, putting her only one back of Wilson. Cornell now sits third in league scoring with nine goals, while Roy has eight and Rogozinski and Grynol have each connected for seven.
Big cushion
Gillons’ is putting some significant space between themselves and the rest of the teams in the men’s division, aided by a pair of major victories last week.
The first-place squad (10-1-1) pitched a 2-0 shutout July 8 against third-place and defending league champions Taggs (5-3-2), with league scoring leader Jeremy Wilson scoring both goals.
Gillons’ then fought back from a two-goal deficit to beat Nova 3-2 this past Thursday. Wilson netted his 10th of the year, with Dan Poperechny and Adam McTavish also scoring. Steve Keesic had both Nova markers to move into a third-place tie with Gillons’ Matt Basaraba in the scoring race with seven goals, one behind Olaf Ruppenstein of Taggs.
In last week’s only other game, second-place Nova (6-5-1) blanked winless ITS (0-11-0) by a 4-0 count. Keesic and Andy Hallikas both scored twice in the win, with Ryan Hampton posting the shutout.
Monday’s action was washed away by the severe thunderstorms in the area.
Scores for last night games between Taggs and Nova (men) and Taggs and Gillons’ (women) were not available at press time.
