Taggs ‘AA’ team captures bronze

The local Taggs Bantam ‘AA’ hockey team brought home third-place honours from its first tournament of the season—a 10-team showdown held Nov. 11-13 in Portage la Prairie, Man.
Just missing top spot in their pool by only one goal after round-robin play, Taggs wound up with the bronze medal after beating the Springfield Ice Hawks 5-2 in the third vs. fourth game.
D.J. Bombay got Taggs on the board first, assisted by Ryan Shortreed and Matt DePiero, before Mitch Cain made it 2-0. Bombay drew the assist.
Zach McCool got one in the second period, assisted by T.J. Pocock and Cain, before Blake Wepruk (Joe Basaraba/Josh Scott) and DePiero (Cody McCool) rounded out Taggs’ scoring in the third.
Taggs had opened the tournament with a 3-2 win over the host Portage Terriers.
DePiero made it 1-0, assisted by Patrick Bobczynski, then Shortreed tallied twice in the second period to seal the victory. Matt Goldamer and Jamie Kaun drews the assists, respectively.
Taggs was back on the ice only 90 minutes later to face the Morden Hawks. The locals outshot the Hawks, but a few minor injuries from the first game left their bench short.
Morden prevailed by a 4-0 score.
But it was all Taggs in their third game versus Carman, Man. as they cruised to a 5-0 victory.
After a scoreless first period, Cain opened the floodgates to a four-goal outburst in the second thanks to pretty assists by Goldamer and Bombay.
DePiero (Wepruk), Cain (unassisted), and Wepruk (Cody McCool) also scored to make it 4-0.
Zach McCool (Wepruk/Basaraba) netted the lone goal of the third period.
Up next for Taggs, who are coached by Don McCool and Wayne Strachan, is their annual home tournament this weekend (Nov. 25-27) at the Memorial Sports Centre.
Other upcoming tournaments include International Falls (Dec. 2-4), Baudette (Dec. 9-11), Bemidji (Dec. 17-18), and the Steel City International in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. (Jan. 5-8).
