Taekwondo fighters bring home medals

The 22nd-annual Central Canadian Taekwondo championship wrapped up Nov. 5 at the University of Manitoba.
Competitors from Fort Frances and district contended against fellow fighters from Ontario and Manitoba for gold, silver, and bronze medals in the form (belt) and sparring categories.
Fort Frances resident Sarah Degagne took home a gold medal in the blue belt category. Keeping it in the family, black belt competitor Josh Degagne grabbed silver.
James McInerney of Rainy River also took home a silver medal, competing in the green belt category against Charlotte Bombay of Fort Frances, who captured bronze.
All four finalists for the form competitions also competed in the fighting/sparring category.
McInerney managed to take home a second silver medal while Bombay, Josh Degagne, and Sarah Degagne all finished with bronze medals in this category.
These young athletes have been training to compete, some for up to five years, and plan on attending three more competitions in 2006.
Northwest Taekwondo holds classes Mondays and Wednesdays at Fort Frances High School as well as Tuesdays and Thursdays at Our Lady of the Way School in Stratton.
Anyone is welcome to join and learn self-defence, physical fitness, and discipline while also gaining self-confidence.
