The Fort Frances Super 8 PeeWee girls’ hockey team returned from Dryden with a third-place showing at the annual Kathy Sanders Memorial tournament.
Facing Petrie’s Stars (Thunder Bay) in the ‘B’ final Sunday morning, Abby Plourde netted the go-ahead goal with 9:11 left in the third period to give the Super 8’s a 2-1 win.
Madison Morrison scored the opening goal for the victors in the second period.
The Super 8’s ended up in the third-place game after completing the four-game round-robin with a 1-2-1 record, which was good enough for fourth in the standings.
The squad opened action Friday with a 3-3 draw against the Dryden Herricanes, thanks to a pair of goals by Kassidy Fryer, with Morrison netting the lone goal in that evening’s 1-0 triumph over the Nipigon Elks.
Saturday proved to be a tougher go for the Fort Frances squad, however, as they lost 1-0 to Dryden Petro Canada before falling 3-2 to the Stars despite goals by Anika Beaudry and Sara Jackson.
The tournament also saw the local Rolling Lake Lightning Atom squad travel up for a pair of exhibition games with the Dryden Ice Bergs on Saturday, which they won by scores of 8-3 in the morning and 3-2 in the afternoon.
Meghan Bruyere led the Lightning in both wins, scoring seven goals in the 8-3 win and then collecting a hat trick in the 3-2 triumph.
