Tara Allaire was running on empty but held firm to her place in the top five.
The Emo resident put in a fantastic effort to finish fourth in her 31-runner division, and 12th out of 176 women overall, in the marathon division of the Manitoba Marathon on Sunday in Winnipeg.
Allaire, competing in the female age 25-29 group, posted a time of 3:30.31.
She trailed only race winner Ali Cummings from Sudbury (3:16.19), runner-up Taylor Whittamore of Toronto (3:17.09), and Erin Gardnier of Saskatoon (3:21.27).
The local runner was right in the hunt at the third interval, trailing Cummings and Whittamore by just over two minutes.
But the former university track-and-field recruit lost five minutes to the leaders before the next interval and then another seven on the homestretch.
Three other district runners also enjoyed varying degrees of success in Winnipeg.
In the half-marathon, Lori Green was 11th out of 79 starters in the female age 50-54 group with a time of 1:56.46.
Morningstar Tom of Morson also competed in the half-marathon, coming in 105th out of 156 in the female age 30-34 class (2:21.21).
As for the 10K race, Cindy McKinnon of Fort Frances finished 26th in a field of 38 in the female age 60-64 division (1:39.27).
