The BDO Stars PeeWee girls’ team nipped Fort Frances Esso 5-4 to win the ‘A’ final of the Fort Frances Atom ‘A’ hockey tournament yesterday at the Ice for Kids Arena.
Unable to break a 4-4 deadlock after five minutes of a three-on-three overtime, the championship game went down to a shootout.
Esso forward James Brown was stopped by Stars’ goalie Savannah Woods on his attempt, opening the door for Joe-dy Morrisseau to win the game.
The Stars’ captain made the most of her opportunity, beating Connor Watson five-hole with a wrist shot to earn the win—and the tourney crown.
The older Stars’ team was a late addition to the 12-team tourney, filling in on an emergency basis after one of the teams scheduled to compete pulled out at the last moment.
In other tourney action, the Kenora Legion Blues captured the ‘B’ crown courtesy of a 5-2 win over the Emo Hawks while the Hall’s Flyers beat the Keewatin Place Blues 5-2 to claim the ‘C’ title.
