The Muskie senior girls’ volleyball team learned to get up for the big games at the Lakehead University Classic in Thunder Bay over the weekend.
In the preliminary round, the Muskies split sets with two of the city’s top teams in the La Verendrye Vipers and St. Ignatius Falcons.
To finish the round-robin, Fort High dropped both sets against the Dryden Eagles to wind up third in their pool.
In the playoffs, the black-and-gold swept the Hammarskjold Vikings 2-0 to survive the first round, but then met up with Dryden again in the second round.
The Muskies took the first set, bouncing back from a six-point deficit. But the Eagles won the next two sets to advance and send Fort High home.
Kayla Windigo was named team MVP for the tournament.
The tournament followed a 3-2 loss in their best-of-five NorWOSSA showdown in Kenora last Thursday.
The Muskies lost the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-17, then fought back to take the next two 25-23 and 25-11.
Then after charging out to a 10-8 lead in the fifth set, the Broncos battled back by reeling off seven-straight points to seal the win.
The loss dropped Fort High to 2-4 in NorWOSSA play.
The Muskie junior girls’ volleyball team also faced Kenora last Thursday, avenging the seniors’ loss with a 3-1 triumph.
After falling 25-19 in the first set, Fort High strung together wins of 25-23, 25-23, and 25-13 to take the best-of-five match.
The win improved the juniors to 2-4 in NorWOSSA.
Both squads were in action here yesterday against the Dryden Eagles, then will wrap up the NorWOSSA regular season tomorrow (Feb. 11) in Kenora.
