The Owl senior boys’ volleyball team got off to decent start to the NorWOSSA ‘A’ season by splitting its road matches.
After sweeping the Ignace Falcons 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, and 25-17) back on Oct. 1, the Owls (1-1) were dispatched 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 19-25, and 22-25) by the Pelican Falls Timberwolves the following day.
“We were down in both matches and they didn’t give up,” Owls’ coach Guy Arpin lauded of his squad.
“They showed some grit and determination early.”
Arpin feels as though if the Owls can do the little things right in matches moving forward, they’ll be able to improve on their 1-1 record.
“I say it time and time again, take care of the little things and the big things will take care of themselves,” he reasoned.
“We need to focus on one play at a time and do the little things right.
“Being sure to put the serve in the court, and that first pass is so critical to setting up an attack,” he stressed.
“Once we get better at those two things, our attack will start to be effective.”
As for the juniors, they opened the season with back-to-back losses to the host Falcons and Timberwolves to start out with an 0-2 record.
Set scores of those matches were unavailable.
Both Owls’ squads were supposed to have a pair of home matches last Tuesday and Wednesday against the Red Lake Rams and Timberwolves, but they were rescheduled due to the possibility of a CUPE strike.
Some reshuffling of the schedule gave the Owls last week off and they were slated to resume NorWOSSA play yesterday in Red Lake (the scores were unavailable at press time).
Both the seniors and juniors then were slated to face the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints in Kenora this afternoon before wrapping up the week with their first home matches tomorrow afternoon against the Rams at RRHS.
