Squashers take fifth

Four members of the local Sunset Country Squash Club represented Northwestern Ontario at the Ontario Junior Squash team championships in Niagara-on-the-Lake over the weekend, helped their team to a fifth-place showing.
That was one better than their result from a year ago.
Anniss Seid (U19), Shawn Brady (U15), Anika Alexander (U17), and Angel McCormack (U15) all took part in the event, with Manami Alexander acting as a coach/manager for the team along with Bob Shine of Thunder Bay.
Alexander and McCormack were the top performers for the team on the weekend, both finishing up play with perfect 6-0 marks.
Alexander’s performance in the U17 division was particularly impressive given she’s still eligible to play in the U15 ranks.
As for the boys’, Seid completed his final go-around at the provincial level before moving to Manitoba in the fall with a 2-4 mark.
Brady, meanwhile, finished with a 1-5 record, but did have two close contests against a pair of highly-ranked junior national level competitors in the U15 division.
Next up for Sunset Country Squash Club members is the Manitoba Open, which runs March 11-13 in Winnipeg.
