The Sunset Country Squash Club returned home with some strong results at the eighth-annual Red Lake Open squash tournament last weekend.
In the men’s ‘B’ division final, Ben Andrusco defeated fellow club member Jason Kabel 3-1 in the best-of-five showdown.
Local players Al Christiansen and Steve Krag also fared well and even played each other, with the 14-year-old Krag downing the veteran.
But Krag lost 3-2 in the best-of-five ‘B’ consolation final to Alex Holmes of Red Lake.
In another all-Fort Frances final, Mary-Beth Tkachuk downed Kris Krag 3-1 in their ladies’ ‘AB’ final.
And in vets’ play, Bob Tkachuk blanked Bruce Piercy (Red Lake) 3-0 to earn consolation round bragging rights.
Fellow vet Jim Krag failed register a win on the court–but dominated out on the lake by catching an eight-pound walleye prior to the tournament.
Club member Bill Naturkach also was supposed to make the trip north but stayed home due to illness.
