Nine Sunset Country Squash Club juniors competed at the Subway Winnipeg Squash Racquets Club junior tournament over the weekend, with all them coming away with strong showings.
“The goals for the players this weekend was to focus on the basic game strategy and their overall effort, especially with the young ones,” noted head coach Bob Tkachuk.
“By the final day on Sunday, the kids were having fun and performing their best, which is something that I love to see,” he added.
Angel McCormack and Chase Badiuk led the way with pool victories, with David Jackson and Marita Matias earning runner-up finishes.
Anniss Seid and Shawn Brady rounded out the podium finishes with third-place showings.
Rounding out the local contingent were Jesse Quesnell, Jake Clendenning, Trace Gosselin, and Wyatt McLeod, who all played well but missed out on a podium showing.
“For Jake, Trace, and Wyatt, this was their first-ever tournament so I thought they did a great job in challenging themselves,” Tkachuk said.
Next up for the local squashers is the Manitoba closed tournament in Winnipeg on Feb. 3-5, followed by the club’s 25th-anniversary tournament set for Feb. 17-19.
