Both the fish and the fun was biting in large amounts Saturday in the west end of the district.
Stratton’s 23rd-annual “Fishing Derby at Morley Park” saw plenty of walleye and northern pike make their way into boats as anglers merrily cruised the waters of the Rainy River on the opening weekend of walleye fishing in the district.
In the walleye category, Todd Brannan had the top catch at 3.4 pounds, followed by Dorothy Battes, Ben Robinson, and Claude Seguin.
For northerns, Reuben Korb landed the victory with a 3.1-pounder.
Cohen Robinson took second, followed by Hudson Seguin and Maria Vandenbrand.
Weights for the non-winners were unavailable at press time.

Fort Frances teen Averi King is the first recruit from here to officially sign with the reborn Rainy River Community College Voyageurs women’s hockey team for the upcoming season.
King plays both forward and defence, and spent the last few seasons as a member of various boys’ hockey teams in the Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association.
Head coach Erin Shikowsky is trying to resurrect the Voyageurs after RRCC did not compete last season in Division 2 of the ACHA due to a lack of players.
In the two seasons previous, with a healthy dose of Fort Frances players in their lineup, the Voyageurs finished tied for third and then wound up second at the ACHA national championships.

Work was expected to resume this week on the Fort Frances Multi-Use Tennis Courts located on the southern boundary of St. Francis School.
The process of laying the four court surfaces, as well as doing any accompanying work, is expected to take three weeks at most.
The town hopes to have the courts ready for public use on June 3, with a worst-case scenario seeing them unveiled on June 10.
