Sports briefs – Fort Frances Times

The Kenora ‘AAA’ Major Midget Stars, of which Fort Frances native Cody Dittaro is a member, lost to the Thunder Bay ScotiaMcLeod ‘AAA’ Kings 7-3 on Sunday at the Northwestern Ontario Major Midget championship in the Lakehead.
The Stars started the three-team tournament with an 8-1 win over the Marathon Superior Eagles, then lost 9-1 to the Kings to give them a spot in the final.
With the win, the Kings now will head to the four-team west regional showdown, with that winner advancing to the national championship in Gatineau, Que. next month.

Ashley LaFreniere, 15, averaged 222 in the ladies’ portion of the National Five-Pin Bowling Association’s Youth Challenge as part of Team Ontario last weekend to give her an 18th-place finish overall.
She had qualified for the nationals, which were held in Hamilton, by gaining the top spot out of 43 ladies at the Northern Ontario Five-Pin Bowling Association’s Youth Challenge this past December.

In “Monday Night” men’s basketball action this week, La Place Rendez-Vous edged the Muskies in overtime by a score of 73-71.
High scorers for the Rendez-Vous were Jeff Lallak (13), Brad Wardas (11), and Mike Belluz (nine) while the Muskies were led by Andrew Dobie (23), Anwar Cheblaoui (14), and Mark Buist (13).
In the late game, the ViaNets dismantled Taggs 89-55. High scorers for the ViaNets were John Laplant (23), Shaun Bullen (21), and Rob McGinnis (18) while Taggs were led by Victor McGee (16), Benjamin Jackson (13), and Randy Morrisseau (nine).
These games were the last of the regular season, with the playoffs taking place April 4 at Fort High. First-place Vous will the fourth-place Muskies at 6:30 p.m. while the second-place Vianets will meet the third-place Taggs at 8 p.m.
The finals then would be held there April 11.
Spectators are welcome to attend.

Brad Loveday, eight, a goalie for the Minnesota ‘AAA’ Elite travel team, helped his squad to a fourth-place finish at the Minnesota Elite Classic in Minneapolis last weekend.
Loveday had the lowest goals against average in his age group.
