The effort was there but the victories were not.
Team Ontario’s female indoor volleyball team, with Fort Frances resident Amy Wilson-Hands along as an apprentice coach, finished in fourth place at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg over weekend.
After going 4-1 during the preliminary round, then beating Saskatchewan in Thursday’s quarter-finals, Ontario fell 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-17, and 26-24) to host Manitoba in Friday’s semi-finals.
With one more shot at a medal, Ontario went the distance against New Brunswick before coming up short in a 3-2 defeat (26-24, 22-25, 25-14, 19-25, and 15-13).
Manitoba thrilled the home crowd by claiming the gold in a 3-1 win (28-30, 25-22, 25-20, and 25-15) over Alberta in the final.
Ontario still came away as the clear winner in the medal standings with 212 (87 gold, 65 silver, and 60 bronze).
B.C. was a distant second with 146 total medals.
