Spencer makes Manitoba roster

Jamie Spencer’s promising young volleyball career is busting borders.
The 15-year-old Fort Frances resident returned from Winnipeg last week after having made the practice roster for the Team Manitoba U16 girls’ provincial club squad.
“The tryouts were a few weeks ago,” said Spencer, who is a good bet to be a regular in the starting lineup in her second year with the Muskie junior girls’ team this coming season.
“They made two teams of 12 that are their travelling teams and then I made it onto the practice roster,” she noted.
Spencer’s mother, Fort Frances Vipers’ coach Caroline Spencer, signed her daughter up to be scouted during tournaments held in Winnipeg this past club season.
From her performance in those tournaments, the teen caught the eye of Team Manitoba officials, who issued the tryout invitation.
“I thought I played pretty good at the tryouts,” said Spencer, the only one of four Fort-area players to successfully advance from the tryouts
“At first, I was not excited to make it because I didn’t have any of my friends there with me,” she admitted.
“But once they gave us our Team Manitoba T-shirts, I got a little more excited to be there.”
During her training session with the practice squad, Spencer got instruction in more than just her normal spot on the floor.
“I got to play many different positions and got lots of feedback about how I was playing,” she remarked.
“I play the middle usually, but I might like to play right or left side power next season,” Spencer added.
“I learned some good drills that help with ball control that I can share with my high school teammates next season.”
