Both Muskie soccer squads are heading into the final NorWOSSA regular-season action in Dryden this Wednesday with momentum on their side following successful performances in tournaments over the weekend.
The boys’ squad captured the ‘B’-side title at the Beaver Brae Invitational tournament in Kenora yesterday with a 3-0 victory over Crocus Plains (Brandon, Man).
Anniss Seid led the way with a pair of goals while Colton Spicer netted the other one.
Fort High had advanced to the ‘B’ final with a 2-0 shutout over Dryden thanks to another two-goal effort by Seid.
In round-robin play on Saturday, the Muskies blanked Miles Mac (Winnipeg) 1-0 but then fell 2-1 in extra time to St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora).
Spicer had the lone goal in the win over Miles Mac while Brendan Cawston scored against St. Thomas Aquinas.
Meanwhile, the Muskie girls hosted a five-team exhibition tournament Friday and Saturday, finishing up with a 2-1-1 record.
The black-and-gold opened play with a 2-1 win over Dryden before dropping a 2-1 decision to St. Patrick’s (Thunder Bay), with Sara Roach scoring all of the Muskie goals in both games.
Then Saturday saw the Muskies battle the Hanover Soccer Club (Manitoba) to a 1-1 draw before edging Hammarskjold (Thunder Bay) 2-1 to round out the weekend.
Courtney Roach had a goal in each of the games Saturday while Wynona Kavanaugh celebrated her birthday in style by notching the game-winning goal against Hammarskjold.
Following Wednesday’s regular-season finale, the Muskie boys will be preparing for the NorWOSSA playoffs on May 25 in Kenora.
The girls’ squad will take part in a series of games in Duluth this weekend before they head up to Kenora in search of a trip to the all-Ontarios.
