It’s down to playing for pride for the Muskie boys’ soccer team.
A close battle with the Bishop F. Marrocco/Thomas Merton Royals (Toronto), the top-ranked team in Group ‘C,’ ended up in a 1-0 loss for the third-seeded Muskies earlier today at the OFSAA ‘AA’ championships in North Bay.
Fort High (0-3) needed a win to stay alive in its bid to make the top two in the group and advance to the quarter-finals later today.
But an early second-half goal for the Royals (1-2-1) against Muskie keeper Cole Kowalski, that looked to co-coach Chris Sinclair as having gone through the side of the net rather than in, wound up being the difference.
With the loss, the black-and-gold were ousted from playoff contention.
The Muskies fell 4-0 to the fourth-seeded St. David Celtics (Waterloo) yesterday afternoon after having opened play with a 4-0 loss to the second-ranked King’s Christian Cavaliers (Oakville) that morning.
The black-and-gold will try to end their stay on a high note when they close out pool play this afternoon against the fifth-ranked Holy Cross Raiders (Mississauga).
Holy Cross ended the Muskie boys’ hockey team’s dreams at the OFSAA ‘AA’ championships here back in March with a 2-0 win in the final round-robin game.
Sinclair was an assistant coach on that squad while Muskie soccer players Chase McGuire, James Gushulak, and Austin Armstrong were players.
