Snake Krawchuk came out on top of a championship flight of 14 golfers, shooting a 71 Sunday to take the Kitchen Creek Classic.
Krawchuk, a Fort Frances native who has won several other local tournaments—including the Senior’s Open at Kitchen Creek—earned his championship berth by shooting a 74 on the first day.
Krawchuk had to fend off some stiff competition from the rest of the flight, including Rob Badiuk, who won the previous two consecutive years.
“Didn’t go too good for me,” Badiuk said. “Went pretty good for snake, but not for me. I had injured my shoulder about three weeks ago and I was fighting that, so it held me back a little bit out there . . . kind of lame excuse, but it’s a fact. There’s pain there and when you swing, your mind is going, ‘Do you really wanna do this?’”
He said he was upset he wasn’t able to better defend his title and try for a third consecutive title. “I was kind of looking forward to that, but, like I said, I had this injury for a month.”
While he didn’t play with Krawchuk on Sunday, the two did play together on Saturday, and Badiuk said he was impressed with what he saw from the champion on the first day. “He must’ve played real well the second,” he added.
Krawchuk didn’t return calls as time of press, but took home a sports camcorder worth $400, courtesy of Sight & Sound, as the top prize.
“I think overall it went pretty well,” said Wayne Strachan, director of golf at Kitchen Creek. “There was actually a lot of good golfers in the field, and after the first day it probably could’ve been won by at least nine or ten guys.”
