Kyle Turgeon’s second goal of the game with 2:27 to go lifted Skates & Blades to a 2-1 victory over Food Town Fury in the ‘A’ final of a 12-team Tom Thumb tournament here Sunday afternoon.
Matt DePeiro had given the Fury a 1-0 lead with 6:35 left in the first period. But Turgeon, assisted by Julia Martin, tied the game at 1-1 about five minutes later.
The Fury, already with the man advantage, chose to pull their goalie in the final minute and came very close to netting the equalizer.
Skates & Blades reached the final after blanking West End Motors 2-0 in the semi-finals earlier Sunday morning. Matthew Hebert and George Halverson each tallied in that one while T.J. Pocock earned the shutout.
They opened the tournament Friday morning with an 8-0 shutout over the Sioux Lookout Flames, led by Turgeon’s three goals and three assists. Hebert also netted a hat trick while Halverson added a pair.
Donnie Krishka was in goal for the shutout.
Skates & Blades turned in another strong offensive performance in their next game–a 10-2 victory over Tagg’s. Turgeon and Zach McCool each scored three goals while Ben Morrisseau, Mike Jourdain, Halverson, and Hebert tallied singles.
Mitchell Cain and Brett Legarde replied for Tagg’s.
Skates & Blades finished pool play with a 3-0 record after edging the Current River Comets 3-2 on goals by Jourdain, Hebert, and Halverson.
Meanwhile, Food Town reached the final after nipping the Times Tigers 3-1 in semi-final action Saturday night. Charlie Windigo, Kyle Herr, and Logan Allen scored for the Fury.
Alex Shoemaker replied for the Tigers.
Food Town blanked BR Davidson (Atikokan) 4-0 in their opening game Friday afternoon, paced by two goals by Herr and singles by Eva McCabe and Logan Allen.
Ryan Shortreed recorded the shutout.
The Fury wrapped up pool play with a 6-3 win over the Keewatin Blues, then edged the Emo Rockets 2-1. Herr, DePeiro, and Allen each scored twice in the win against the Blues.
Herr scored twice more in the win against the Rockets while Luke Judson replied for Emo.
In the ‘B’ final, the Emo Wings edged Emo OPP 5-4 on Joshua Pollard’s game-winning goal in overtime. Lauren Krukoski also scored twice and Justin Donaldson once for the Wings (their other goal scorer was not available).
Alex Marusyk and Dillan McDonald had a pair for the Emo OPP.
The Emo Wings reached the final after downing BR Davidson 6-2 in the semi-finals Sunday morning. They picked up pool wins over the Flames (7-0) and the Tigers (2-1) while their lone loss was 5-1 to Tagg’s.
And in the ‘C’ final, the Rockets doubled Current River 4-2, paced by goals from Chris Mutz, Charlie DeBungee, Ryan Witherspoon, and Judson.
The Rockets finished pool play with a 1-2 record, beating the Flames 8-1 but losing 5-3 to the Emo OPP and 6-4 to West End Motors.
